Santa will arrive in style to g2g Extravaganza

singlesleigh200Just seventeen (17) days to go till the Extravaganza — and Santa is getting ready.  This week, he got a sweet boost from a team of grandmothers providing him with a candy sleigh, tied up with ribbon. With characteristic creativity and cooperation, some of our members worked together Monday to make an entire fleet of Santa sleighs for sale.

Countdown to the Extravaganza: Friday November 27 10-4 and Saturday November 28 10-4, Quality Inn Bayside, Parksville.

g2g UPDATES: recent minutes, new Directory, and Planning Manual

Hi, everyone.

The MINUTES for both September and October’s g2g meetings are now ready for download from the For members only section of our Oceanside Grandmothers website: https://oceansideg2g.org/for-members-only/  If you can’t remember the password, you can contact Eileen Dombrowski (oceansideg2g@shaw.ca) or any other member of the group.  If you missed the most recent meeting(s), you’ll really want these minutes because there is A LOT going on!

The currently up-to-date DIRECTORY is also now available for download from the For members only section.  Two versions are available for you to choose depending on your internet connection:  the compressed, low-resolution version is fast to download and adequate for consultation; the high-resolution version requires a fast internet connection for downloading but is clearer, especially if you want to print it out.  New members, you’ll definitely want this booklet. It gives pictures of people in our group, along with their contact information, and is valuable for getting to know others and getting in touch with them.

Note that I’ve also updated the NEW MEMBERS sheet for 2015, which is handy for getting to know our latest members. It is available for download from the same page as the Directory.

Last, notice that you can also download the g2g PLANNING MANUAL to which Jacquie and I made reference in our last meeting.  Did you even know that this resource exists?  It identifies 9 steps to follow in our group if you want to organize an event.  It distills a lot of the experience of the Event Committee, Publicity Committee, and Food Committee as they work together to support anyone thinking of organizing an event.

Extravaganza Preserves

A note from coordinator, Lorna Reid:

At the last G2G meeting concern was expressed about the VIHA food inspectors not allowing other groups to sell their preserves to the public. This has now been thoroughly checked out and samples have been sent to a lab in Sydney for PH testing to ensure that we are meeting the safety regulations. I am confident that we will meet the standards and so I would like to encourage Grannies to continue to donate preserves for our table at the Extravaganza.I just recently received the results of the testing on 10 of our products – we are well within the 4.6 limit for all of them!
I think we can all apply common sense to making preserves and use the “Guidelines for Food Preparation at Temporary Markets” from the BC Centre for Disease Control available on the internet if in doubt. For example we can only sell “low-risk” products such as jams, jellies, relishes, chutneys and pickles with a low PH score – this covers most home-made preserves but not things like pickled beans and asparagus, mixes with a lot of tomatoes, pesto or garlic spread, herb and flavoured oils and garlic spread etc.
Please makes sure that your jars are properly sealed and labeled with the name of the product and the ingredients. The regulations require that they be processed in a water bath – please do so even if your recipe does not require it. We are expanding to two tables so we need lots of selection.

Thank you,

Lorna Reid
